Country analysis

The figures from Honduras, tracked since 2000, highlight both progress and persisting challenges in ensuring adequate and equitable investment in public education. The latest available data (2023) shows that 4.05% of GDP was allocated to public education and that education spending represented 15.37% of total government expenditure. Public spending per school-age person stood at US$ 475.68 (2023), under the regional average, reflecting the limitations in available resources for quality education delivery. These figures underscore the importance of increasing and sustaining public investment to strengthen education systems and ensure inclusive learning opportunities for all.

To complement these figures, national-level analysis from our members highlights key recommendations for enhancing equity and ensuring sustained investment in education.

Equity indicators reveal near gender parity but pronounced inequality across income groups. The gender ratio in 2019 was 0.99, slightly above the regional average and indicating near-equal participation of girls and boys in schooling. However, the wealth parity index stood at 4.46, showing that children from the richest households were more than four times as likely to attend school as those from the poorest. This inequality is above the regional average, indicating a more unequal pattern of access that disproportionately affects the most vulnerable learners.
